Session 3: Building a Shared Framework for GenAI at St. Olaf

Overview

This final session is a collaborative brainstorming workshop bringing together students and faculty to co-create visions for responsible and effective GenAI use at St. Olaf. Participants will share discipline-specific needs, successful practices, and concerns, and work toward developing a set of common core principles for AI use across courses and departments. The ideas generated will be synthesized into a publicly shared document as a product of this project, aiming to contribute constructively to ongoing campus conversations about AI rather than replace existing efforts.

Meeting Date and Location

Thursday, March 19th in RNS 356 from 11:30 to 12:30 CST

Note: Due to scheduling difficulties this session will occur over a SOAR session.

Activity

Our goal with this activity is to create common-core recommendations for identifying courses in which Generative AI may be useful. The goal is to have these recommendations be rooted in pedagogy across disciplines.

  1. We define a tool as useful if it genuinely assists its user in developing an understanding of key ideas in a content area, how those key ideas are connected, or both.
  1. Using the definition of useful above, think of at least one course, either one you’ve taken or one you’ve taught, where a GenAI tool would not be useful. What about this course, or its learning objectives, makes that the case?
  2. Now, think of at least one course, either one you’ve taken or one you’ve taught, where a GenAI tool could be useful. What about this course, or its learning objectives, makes that the case?
  1. In Q1, you may have discussed courses in various disciplines; in fact, we hope you did. Now, identify, if there exist, any commonalities among the courses for which genAI tools are:
  1. Not useful
  2. Useful

To get started on those common-core principles, if you have time, please chat about the following proposed principle:

Students should always be given the option to opt out of using GenAI tools.
